The countdown has already begin for season 5 of Boardwalk Empire on HBO. With the series finale coming up, audiences are anxious to find out what will happen to politician/mob boss Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), his ex-wife Margaret Schroeder (Kelly MacDonald) and murderess Gillian Darmody (Gretchen Mol) as the Prohibition era heads into its final act.

In the fifth season, the turf war between Nucky (Buscemi) and Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza) has been building to an intense confrontation. Lives were lost including Chalky White's (Michael K Williams), Al Capone (Stephen Graham) has been arrested, and double crosses were made. Here are 5 reasons why we're going to miss Boardwalk Empire after the series finale.

5) Richard Harrow

Jack Huston was phenomenal as the disfigured hit-man Richard Harrow. We were riveted by his action-packed shootout as he risked his life to save Jimmy Darmody's son. He took down everyone in that sleazy brothel single-handedly.

Special mentions go out to actors Michael Pitt (Hannibal) and Charlie Cox (Marvel's Daredevil), breakout stars in their own right, who also gave noteworthy performances in the previous seasons.

4) Stephen Graham

Like many, I don't know much about Al Capone except for history books and movies, such as The Untouchables. But with the Snatch actor playing the notorious Chicago mob boss, I felt his impressive performance captured an anti-hero who you could root for and be frightened of at the same time.

3) Mickey Doyle

Since the beginning, Paul Sparks provided the much-needed comic relief on the show. It was shocking to see his character bite the dust in the penultimate episode. When the comic relief goes away, that's when you know things are going to get scary.

2) Arnold Rothstein

Michael Stuhlbarg was just simply missed this final season. Through Stulbarg, Rothstein was soft-spoken and quiet for one second, then turned ruthless the next.

1) Bobby Cannavale

Thought the show writers have tried, there hasn't been a more deadly, charismatic, and terrifying antagonist than gangster Gyp Rosetti. The third season is quite possibly the best and this critic's favorite. Cannavale's Emmy win for Best Supporting Actor was definitely well-deserved.

The final episode of Boardwalk Empire airs Sunday 9pm on HBO. Readers, what will you miss most?
