Gordie Howe earned quite the reputation while at the Detroit Red Wings, so much so that he earned the nickname Mr. Hockey. Now, the former NHL star has suffered a severe, life-threatening stroke and his family is rushing to his side, hoping that he can make it through what is being called a "massive fight for his life."

One of Gordie's three sons, Murray Howe, insisted: "I feel like this is his final lap around the rink. I'm guessing that he's not going to recover ... but then again, he's about as strong as they get. If anybody can do it he can."

The legend had just been for a walk the day before his stroke and there were no evident signs of restlessness; but now the family is in shock, hoping that he survives.

The Howe family as a whole released this statement: "The Howe family would like to thank friends, family and fans for your overwhelming well-wishes, prayers and support for Gordie. He suffered a significant stroke on Sunday morning while at his daughter's home in Lubbock, Texas. His condition remains guarded although he is showing some signs of improvement. We acknowledge that there is a long road to recovery ahead, but Dad's spirits are good and his competitive attitude remains strong."

Will Mr. Hockey pull through? What are your best memories of the legend himself? Feel free to leave your best wishes, your favorite memories or video links in the comment box below. Get well soon, Mr. Hockey.
