Officially announced back in 2011, Prey 2 was supposed to be the blockbuster sequel to 2006's first installment. Bethesda has now cancelled Prey 2, squashing any plans for 3D Realms' first-person shooter game.

The follow-up to Prey, the sequel was supposed to focus on U.S. Marshal Killian Samuels, who starts the game on a passenger flight. After his plane crashes onto the Sphere and getting himself kidnapped by aliens, Samuels becomes now a bounty hunter on the alien world Exodus. After running into Domasi "Tommy" Tawodi, the protagonist of the original Prey, Killian attempts to recover his lost memory while going on his bounty-hunting missions.

At PAX Australia, Bethesda Vice President Pete Hines confirms to CNET that the highly anticipated game is now officially cancelled. Unfortunately, the Human Head Studios is no longer working on the development on the game.

Hines states, "It was a game we believed in, but we never felt that it got to where it needed to be - we never saw a path to success if we finished it."

IGN followed the game from its first announcement to its rocky production schedule. The videogame faced many delays due to quality concerns. Bethesda even denied numerous times that development was handed off to another developer. There were reportedly leaked emails, even while the Prey 2 demo was being presented previous years at E3 events.

Hines concedes, "It wasn't up to our quality standard and we decided to cancel it. It's no longer in development. That wasn't an easy decision, but it's one that won't surprise many folks given that we hadn't been talking about it.

Polygon has reached out to Bethesda and Human Head for more details, but have not heard back from either yet.
