1) American Werewolf In London

Probably the most unsettling werewolf transformation in film history. David Kessler (David Naughton) is in incredible pain as his face is elongated while his bones break. Director John Landis brought in the humor and music in Blues Brothers; so now he brings in the scares.

2) Nightmare on Elm Street

So who here is still afraid of Freddy Krueger (Robert England)? Don't forget director Wes Craven  has his comic book Coming of Rage out now and his Scream movies are now an MTV series.

3) Re-Animator

So the zombie removes his head from his body and then gives "head" to the damsel in distress.

4) Night of the Creeps

Director Fred Dekker tells Shock Till You Drop why he holds the zombie/alien flick to his heart, "The favorite scene in the movie where Tom Atkins explains to Jason Lively what happened and it's really good. It's flat-out good, the camera work is good, the music is good." And then there's that awesome scene when Atkins says in character, "Thrill Me."

5) Return of the Living Dead

In a movie where teen Goth punks take down zombies, you know there also has to be a great soundtrack behind it. The track-list contains some deathrock and punk rock bands from the era, including The Cramps and The Damned. South Park also spoofed the horror movie in the episode, Pink Eye.

6) Poltergeist

After heading straight to the bathroom, the guy just rips his face off in the mirror.

7) The Evil Dead

Before he become a household name with Spider-Man, Sam Raimi made this indie cult classic on a shoestring budget. And now he is producing the cinematic adaptation of the videogame, The Last of Us. This is the part where you say "Groovy."

8) Texas Chainsaw Murder Massacre 2

How many people do you think will dress as chainsaw-wielding Leatherface, who wears the face of his victims? A departure from the first installment, Tobe Hooper aimed to bring in laughs with the scares. Hooper also parodied the film festival route and his film's legacy in his satirical zombie book, Midnight Movie.

9) Near Dark

The best vampire movie ever. The bar scene is the scariest part in the whole movie because it starts out from scary bad to an unbelievable disaster. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who would later on win an Oscar for The Hurt Locker.

10) The Thing

John Carpenter made a horror movie that's far scarier than Halloween. The creature effects still hold today, especially now that everything is CGI.

Here's our top 10 horror movies to see this Halloween. Readers, do you have a horror movie that's your favorite?
