This week the first trailer for filmmaker Neil Blomkamp's Chappie debuted, giving us our first real look at the ambitious robot movie. The South African director's filmmaking style is very present in this new trailer, but the story isn't quite as upfront with its action as his prior films were (District 9 and Elysium). Check out the video below to see what we're talking about!

At its heart, Chappie is about a revolutionary step in the developments of robots, and how one is able to learn and grow, mentally, like a human. Sharlto Copley, Blomkamp's go-to man, did the MoCap work for the title role while Dev Patel, Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman help in supporting roles. Also, rappers Ninja and Yolandi Vi$er of Die Antwoord, who have been very involved with this film since its inception, make their acting debuts in this film.

Here is the official synopsis of the movie (via Slash Film):

Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings - some good, some bad - and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there's one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.
