The CMA Awards are getting closer and closer and one of the "New Artist" nominees Thomas Rhett is opening up about his music background. The "Make Me Wanna" singer even revealed that he has never been to prom.

Thomas is one of five artists up for the New Artist of the Year award on Wednesday night's award show. The 24-year-old isn't new to the music world however, growing up as songwriter Rhett Akins' son. The "Beer with Jesus" singer also has a very eclectic taste in music, which makes sense based on the first CD he ever bought.

"I was probably 12 or 13 and I bought The Darkness album with 'I Believe in a Thing Called Love' on it. I wore that record out — I put it in my Sony Walkman with external speakers and I would blast it in my room," Thomas told People. "The Darkness did something to me. It was like my modern-day Led Zeppelin."

In addition to his tween years, Thomas listen to a variety of music in high school, but unfortunately when asked about his prom song, he admitted that he's never attended a prom.

"We didn't have proms. My wife and I went to a Church of Christ high school and they didn't believe in dancing," he explained to the publication. "We had banquets and then whoever had the coolest parents would throw an after-party where we could all go dance. Lil Jon's 'Get Low' was our jam in high school whenever banquets would roll around."

When Thomas isn't focusing on music, the young country singer is focusing on his wife Lauren Gregory and their future. The happy couple recently took a trip to Italy as a last hurrah before they starting trying to have children.

"We called the trip our baby moon, which means it's the biggest trip we'll take before we start trying to a have kid," the musician told The Tennessean. "I just had the best day and the best time in Lake Como. It was the prettiest place I've ever seen in my whole life."

Tune in on Wednesday night to ABC to see who takes home the award for New Artist of the Year.
