In the summer of 2013, Marouane Fellaini was the big-money transfer signing for Manchester United, but it's fair to say things didn't quite go to plan in his opening season with the club. The former Everton man was almost forced out of the club on a loan or permanent move, but he decided to stay, trying to fight for his place. In recent weeks he's become a Premier League regular for Louis Van Gaal's team, and it seems that he finally feels he can open up about his horrid year. He has admitted he was below par, but he has hit out at his doubters, saying he was a "scapegoat" for the club's poor season.

At Everton he was known for his strength, his game-winning goals and his ability to dominate games from the middle of the park, however, his new club had yet to see any kind of that presence in their team. Due to their many injuries this season, he got an unexpected chance or two to shine, and he's done just that, playing himself into earning a future at Old Trafford, or at the very least ensuring a bigger club will look to buy him in the coming months.

When asked if he was made a scapegoat, he replied, saying, "Yes, a little bit." He continued, "I didn't lose faith in myself. You have to be strong in the head. The mentality is important. My family helped me through it. I was also in the national team for Belgium at the World Cup and I played well and the team also played well. For my confidence, that was important. I came back after the summer confident. I am fit now and that is why I am better. When I am super fit, I will be better, I am sure."

Was Fellaini a scapegoat for United's poor form, or was the negativity a fair reflection?
