There might be just under a year left until next year's Halloween, but this week we learned some scary news about the upcoming horror TV series Scream, based on the Wes Craven film franchise of the same name. While some earlier rumors about the series stated that the iconic Ghostface mask wouldn't be involved, MTV ensured fans that the speculation was false and that the series mask will be an updated version that is more "organic" than the film version. (SPOILERS to follow)

When the reports of the mask not being used in the show started spreading, it seemed like a bad move by MTV. Fortunately, network executive Mina Lefevre cleared this concern up in a new statement to Entertainment Weekly.

"It's a darker, almost more grounded, evolved version of the mask," she explained, according to Slash Film. "It's something we're constantly talking about. How did that mask become that mask? What's its purpose? How did it evolve? If the Scream movie mask was the more plastic version, for a lack of a better description, this one is a more organic looking and frankly darker version."

The executive went on to explain that the TV series will aim to reinvent the popular movie franchise.

"Scream was incredibly iconic, but we wanted to reinvent that for TV while of course keeping all the main elements that made it so iconic, including a mask, but also the soapy teen stories, pop culture humor, the scares and the killer," she told EW. "We're tonally walking that line, yet delivering the scares in a significant way. The mask was a big discussion creatively. We wanted to get a nod and a wink to what the original was, but we definitely wanted to make it more on par with what horror is now, which is darker."

So it looks like "darker" is the main thing we can take out of this news. What do you think about these statements? Let us know in the comments section below!
