Bette Midler has lashed out in spectacular fashion at popstrelle Ariana Grande, calling the former Nickelodeon star "ridiculous" and saying that her career would be much better if she didn't "whore" herself out in order to succeed.

The Beaches star let loose in an interview with The Daily Telegraph while in the UK to promote her new album, It's The Girls, which features Bette singing a range of favorite tunes from girl groups such as The Ronettes, The Supremes, The Shirelles and even TLC.

Grande, whose "Santa Tell Me" Christmas single was released today, came under fire from Midler for "slithering" and using sex to sell.

"It's terrible!" Better said of the current pop music climate. "It's always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch, looking so ridiculous.

"I mean," she continued to The Daily Telegraph, "it's silly beyond belief and I don't know who's telling her to do it. I wish they'd stop. But it's not my business, I'm not her mother. Or her manager. Maybe they tell them that's what you've got to do. Sex sells. Sex has always sold."

Complaining that today's music didn't pack the punch of the girl groups of yore, Midler added in the interview that "whatever strictures there were have fallen apart. And now it's whatever you feel like doing you can do. I mean, apparently people really like to pretend they're having sex. They really like to slap each other's butts."

This brought up Midler being confused as to how anybody would sustain a career such as hers when relying so blatantly on sex to sell records. "I don't know what the end game is going to be," she said. "I don't know where you go from all that sex in your twenties. I don't know how you sustain it."

Midler - who also performed and attended the Royal Variety Performance earlier this month - then offered some advice for singers like Grande, saying that she ought to simply "trust your talent. You don't have to make a whore out of yourself to get ahead. You really don't."

Grande performed a medley at last night's AMAs, looking, as Hollywood Life point out smoking hot in her gold hot pants, and later tweeted out that she had "So much fun".

She also used her instagram to plug the newly released "Santa Tell Me":

happy holidays babes :)

As for Midler she was spotted in London hanging out with none other than fellow diva Adele, as the Daily Mail report, heading out to dinner at an exclusive restaurant called Locanda Localtelli near London's Hyde Park. Perhaps Bette simply prefers Adele's career path to the one taken by Grande?

What do you think? Was Bette right to call out Ariana for being too sexualized? Or is Bette in the wrong for calling her out so blatantly?
