It looks like it's FINALLY happening. The world is going to be delighted with a sequel to the heavily popular 1996 film Independence Day. Sadly, it's not exactly the one we wanted. Sorry folks, looks like the new film could be missing a couple of key elements. You know, like Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum. Womp, womp, womp... But hey, at least we've been seeing a little bit more of Smith lately, like when he congratulated his Fresh Prince of Bel Air co-star Alfonso Ribeiro on his Dancing with the Stars win.

It's being reported by Deadline that the famed alien drama's sequel has finally be confirmed and greenlit by 20th Century Fox. The studio is hopeful for a May 2015 start date on production. Additionally, they've given a speculated release date for June 24, 2016. The next move is to lock down Roland Emmerich as a director. Emmerich, of course, directed the first film, which went on to earn over $800 million. Despite the hopeful return of the director, unfortunately Smith is not expected to reprise his role of Captain Steven Hiller. Though, as Deadline further notes, should Smith decide he'd like to be a part of the new film, screenwriter Dean Devlin would happily (we're assuming) write him in. After all, it is the Fresh Prince!

Following Emmerich's deal being locked, the Hollywood publication reports that casting will begin. If all goes as planned, the movie will be open for the 2016 July 4 weekend.

So, readers, are you hopeful for an Independence Day sequel? Many could assume it may be a disappointment, considering Smith is (so far) out of the project, and no word has been discussed about bringing back the likes of Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Randy Quaid. But let's try and remain hopeful, what say you?
