Before the second season of The Strain begins, FX is releasing Season 1 on DVD and Blu-Ray in time for the Christmas holidays. Based on the Dark Horse Comics adaption of his own vampire novels, visionary director Guillermo Del Toro launched an entertaining and frightening horror series staring Corey Stoll and Mía Maestro.

The series follows Eph (Stoll) and Nora (Maestro) as they discover a deadly vampire plague spreading across New York City. As they search for a cure, an old vampire hunter, Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley), comes out of retirement to face off an ancient evil. They must work together to save the world from The Master.

As we previously mentioned, there will be bonus features included in the DVD and Blu-Ray package. The behind-the-scenes featuettes, In the Beginning, A Novel Approach, and Setrakian's Lair provide an inside look at the making of the vampire drama.

Here are 5 reasons why you should get your hands on The Strain: Season 1:

5) Abraham

Not only can David Bradley play a creepy and sleazy antagonist in Game of Thrones (cough Red Wedding cough), he can also be an action hero as well. We're cheering every time Abraham (Bradley) takes out his sword from his cane as he gets ready to chop a bloodsucker's head off.

4) Thomas Eichorst

Richard Sammel (Inglorious Bastards) practically steals the show as he relishes every moment playing Eichorst. We were rooting for the bad guy when Eichorst launched an attack at Abraham's secret base in the episode, Last Rites.

3) Creatures of the Night

Possibly the best episode and my personal favorite too, the group ends up crossing paths with Vasiliy Fet (Kevin Durand), who added the much-needed comic relief to the mix. Not only were Vasiliy and Eph butting heads, the team lost one of its members, Jim Kent (Sean Astin), in a shocking twist.

2) Miguel Gómez

Special shout-out goes to Gómez, who played the tough momma's boy, Gus Elizalde. If you follow his character arc closely, you'll notice how Gus will have a big role in the upcoming second season. We loved that moment when Gus bumped into Zach (Ben Hyland) at the abandoned supermarket.

1) Fighting The Master

We loved the fight sequences leading up to the action-packed showdown with The Master. How do you kill a vampire who can survive in the sunlight? We're going to be wondering that till the second season finally gets here.

The Strain arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray on December 2. Readers, are you ready to add season one to your collection?
