Neil Armstrong, 82, has died from heart surgery complications on August 25, 2012.  The astronaut was the first man to step on the moon in the history of mankind on July 20, 1969.  Though he is no longer on earth, his legacy will always remain.

His family released the following statement.

"Neil Armstrong was also a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job.  He served his Nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. ... He remained an advocate of aviation and exploration throughout his life and never lost his boyhood wonder of these pursuits."

"For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.""

Twitterverse also paid tribute to the first "moon walker" with some heartfelt and some silly messages.

@ItsFunnyLife tweeted, "In 2009 we lost Michael Jackson. Now we've lost Niel Armstrong. We're running out of moon walkers."

@FunnyJokeBook lightly joked, "Retweet if you think they should burry Neil Armstrong on the moon!"

@MikeF3rri imagined a scenario where "Apparently Neil Armstrong used to tell bad jokes about the moon. When no one laughed, he'd shrug and say "guess you had to be there."

Finally, he will be remembered for her now famous words when he first landed on the moon successfully: "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." R. I. P. Neil Armstrong.
