With the first season of FX'The Strain out onto DVD/Blu-Ray, viewers are already anxious to see the upcoming Season 2. Based on the Dark Horse Comics adaption his own vampire novels, will visionary director Guillermo Del Toro take Eph (Corey Stoll) to "a much darker place?"

The first season follows Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll) and Nora Martinez (Mia Maestro) as they discover a deadly vampire plague spreading across New York City. As they search for a cure, an old vampire hunter, Abraham Setrakian, (David Bradley) comes out of retirement and a rat exterminator, Vasiliy Fet (Kevin Durand) joins the crusade to face off an ancient evil. They must all work together to save the world from The Master.

In the season finale, Eph couldn't bare himself to shoot as his wife, Kelly, even though she turned into a bloodsucker. He emptied his clip, forcing Kelly to retreat before she could snatch up their son. Not only did Eph fail his wife and son, the recovering alcoholic started drinking again as he watched New York turn into a fiery pit of Hell.

In an interview with Collider, Del Toro reveals the second season will a little off course from book two, entitled The Fall, "We're going a little more off book this season than the last season. The last season went quite a bit off book on the last third, but this season we are introducing new characters even to the books and some characters are going to have really interesting arcs. Eph is going to a much darker place after losing Kelly. It's a really interesting new world."

As we previously mentioned, the Devil's Backbone filmmaker dropped a few hints, as he directed second unit on the flashbacks for the retired Mexican wrestler. Actor Ron Canada (West Wing) will also be joining the cast the bumbling Mayor of New York, who doesn't know how to handle the vampire epidemic.
