The series finale of season 7 finally came for Sons of Anarchy on FX, leaving many viewers emotionally wrecked and debating the ending. Before Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) delivered his last killing spree, was there an alternate ending where the leader of SAMCRO found "peace and liberation?"

In our previous recap, Nero (Jimmy Smits) couldn't stop Jax (Hunnam) from pursuing Tara's killer. At the point of no return, Jax and Wayne Unser (Dayton Callie) ended up at the same place as Gemma (Katey Sagal). After putting a bullet into Unser, Jax walked Gemma towards the garden, let her smell the flowers, and shot her in the back of the head.

During the series finale, Jax said his goodbyes to his kids and to the club, leaving Nero (Jimmy Smits) and Wendy (Drea De Matteo) as their guardians. While being chased by the police, Jax rode on his father's motorcycle, heading straight towards his death. During the 7-minute musical interlude, Jax let his arms loose and collided head-first into the incoming truck.

After the show ended, audiences were set to watch Anarchy Afterward, featuring creator/showrunner Kurt Sutter and the Pacific Rim actor himself. The actor and director spoke in-depth about the last minutes, knowing they were going to "say goodbye to Jax at the end."

As transcribed by Entertainment Weekly, Sutter reveals, "There was discussion that he's on the road, and we see that truck and we leave it sort of open-ended. Then ultimately, I felt like this has not been a show of what ifs.... This has always been a show about direct, specific choices, and direct, specific consequences, so I realized I needed to be clear in terms of whether it happened or it didn't. And I just felt that it ultimately was the greatest sacrifice, and that's how it would have to end."

Hunnam then described the Jax's choice as a "great sense of peace and liberation that came with that decision."

Even executive producer Paris Barclay defends the ending to E! Online, "Well, spoiler alert, Hamlet dies in the end too, I hate to tell you. In tragedies, generally the hero dies. That's a given! How we get there is the fun part of it and I think we got there in a way that was had action and amusement-not amusement in the sense of ha-ha-ha, but amusement in the sense of heart-tugging, touching stuff."
