Fox's 'Gracepoint' Axed: David Tennant, Anna Gunn's Season 2 Cancelled, Joins 'Mulaney,' 'Red Band Society!'

Though the culprit's identity has been revealed, Gracepoint  has been axed along with Red Band Society and Mulaney from Fox's lineup. Detectives Emmett Carter (David Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Anna Gunn) will not be returning for Season 2 to deal with their unsolved case.

As we previously mentioned, in the re-imagination of BBC's Broadchurch, Gracepoint follows the tragedy that struck a small and once quiet town in Northern California. When a young boy, Danny, is found dead on a beach, everyone is a suspect when Ellie and Emmett declare the death a homicide. The clock was ticking for the detectives to find the culprit before the town became caught in its own web of lies and deceit.

In the finale's recap, Danny was killed by Joe (Josh Hamilton), the husband of the detective (Gunn). With the case settled though, Ellie suddenly discovered Joe was lying about what happened. Danny's death actually be caused by an accidental blow inflicted by the detective's son. In the cliffhanger, Ellie witholds the truth from her partner, Emmett (Tennant), but he discovers the revelation on his own. 

According to Entertainment Weekly, the miniseries thriller will not be continuing on Fox due to low ratings. Though Gotham, the Batman prequel, will be returning after its mid-season break, Gracepoint joins Mulaney, Red Band Society, and Utopia, who have also been cancelled. Audiences will see the tenth Doctor Who back in his original form in the U.K.'s Broadchurch, which has been granted a second season. 

As we reported here, Gracepoint hadn't been stellar in ratings, but that didn't stop co-showrunner Dan Futterman from making plans for the second season. 

Futterman reveals, "So ending in a different place with this last episode felt like a great jumping off point for a potential second season where then things would be very, very different from Broadchurch Season 2, just as a matter of necessity, because of the situation between Carver and Ellie."
