Back in 2013, New Regency announced a new film project based on Guy Delisle's graphic novel Pyongyang, which followed an American working in North Korea. Gore Verbinski was set to helm the project with Steve Carell set to star. This movie has officially been cancelled after the scary situation this month with the Sony email hacks and the cancellation of The Interview, which was a comedy about assassinating dictator Kim Jong-un. With the future of this Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy looking pretty bleak, New Regency decided to shelf the Carell picture indefinitely, probably to avoid terrorist threats.

According to Deadline, this movie was not a comedy, so the backlash could have been far worse. It was set to start filming in March 2015, but the plug has already been pulled. Entertainment Weekly has confirmed the cancellation news.

Slash Film reports that the location of the film won't move to another studio, and if it did, Fox refuses to distribute it.

Carell can be seen in 2014's Foxcatcher, which has Oscar buzz growing around the usual comedic actor for his dramatic portrayal.

Amazon describes this autobiographical graphic novel from Delisle:

Famously referred to as one of the "Axis of Evil" countries, North Korea remains one of the most secretive and mysterious nations in the world today. In early 2001 cartoonist Guy Delisle became one of the few Westerners to be allowed access to the fortresslike country. While living in the nation's capital for two months on a work visa for a French film animation company, Delisle observed what he was allowed to see of the culture and lives of the few North Koreans he encountered; his findings form the basis of this remarkable graphic novel. Pyongyang is an informative, personal, and accessible look at a dangerous and enigmatic country.
