Freddy Adu, the American soccer player who became the youngest player to debut in the MLS when he did at age 14, is leaving his Serbian club and is on the move again, according to Sports Illustrated. Adu appeared in just one game in six months for Jagodina, which ended up being another temporary stop in a once promising career full of them.
Since 2008, Adu has been loaned to Monaco, Portugal, Greece and Turkey, but has never stuck around long enough to make much of an impact. He participated in the World Cup for USA in 2008 and 2012 but didn't make the most recent tournament team.
"This is probably the worst feeling I've ever felt in my life so far as a pro athlete," Adu said after the Americans failed to qualify for 2012 London, according to Yahoo! Sports. "This is going to be hard to get over."
He has more to get over now that he's looking for employment again.
Adu is now 25 and looking for his next job. He tweeted to those who believe he got released from Jagodina. "Easy guys," Adu tweeted. "I signed a 6 month contract. And it's done now. I didn't get "released." Knew I was leaving a few months ago."
Adu never lived up to his starlet status, despite living a life of luxury overseas, according to the Daily Mail. He was dubbed "the next Pele" when he first came up with DC United.
"Thank God for Twitter," Adu tweeted. "There are a lot of false information out there. I signed a 6 MONTH deal and it's done now. Simple as that. #truth"
Vice Sports reported that Adu was not playing for an elite club. Instead, Jagodina was seventh in the Serbian SuperLiga, Europe's 27th best league.
