Showtime's Homeland spent its first three seasons largely in the United States of America, but the series shifted to Pakistan for the majority of Season 4. Now that the fourth season finale has aired, it's time to wonder where the show will go for Season 5. Should it return to America, or go somewhere else?

Showtime president David Nevins spoke on this subject with EW.com.

"I don't think they've settled on anything," he said. "[Showrunner] Alex [Gansa] is always very adamant he wants to focus on nothing but the season in front of him. But certainly going somewhere else overseas-they're not going back to Pakistan-is one possibility."

A return to America could be a step backward for the show, as much of the action in Pakistan was fresh and engaging. But the series also did some of its best work in the United States, so it could keep the momentum going, as well.

Nevins also spoke about the divisive finale.

"We went out of season three with this massive ending, with the death of Brody. And I think a show with this amount of political and narrative complexity can do a last episode that has a change of pace. I thought they needed to do an episode back in Washington, and needed to deal with Carrie's family situation and her issues with motherhood. And there needed to be a political conclusion, too, not just an action conclusion.

The season had some great action, but at its core it was really a political thriller about America's place in the world, and how difficult that position is in the 21st century. This season is very much about how America deals with the Muslim world, and what it means that Dar Adal was sitting in the back seat as Haqqani was taking his victory lap in Islamabad. When I first saw it, I told [showrunner Alex Gansa] it was one of the show's most beautiful episodes."

Some fans did not appreciate the slower pace of the finale, while others liked the epilogue style of the episode. The finale ended when Carrie learned that Saul had taken Dar Adal's offer to return to the CIA at the cost of letting Haqqani go free.

We now have some interesting set up for the next season. Carrie and Saul would appear to be at odds. Saul is now fully back into the intelligence game after his ill-fated turn in the private sector. Quinn is off on a mission in another country, unable to get out of the spy business. And Haqqani is still in the wind.
