"Pieta" snagged the top award at the 69th Venice Film Festival this year.  South Korean and French-educated director Kim Ki-duk shocked the audience when he sang a Korean song on the stage when he received the award, straying away from the typical acceptance speech.

Below are the Korean words with the english translation next to it:

Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo, -> These are words sung by the older Korean generation, but it essentially has no defined definition

Arirang Gogaero Num u gan da -> "Walk over the hill of 'Arirang'

Na rul bu ri go ga shi nun nim un -> "The man who leaves me"

Ship li do mot ga su  bal byoung nan da -> "will have a foot disease before reaching 4km."

Directo Kim explained, "We Koreans sing it when we feel lonely or abandoned but also when we are happy. It symbolises the many hills we have to cross - from sadness to joy - the meanders of life,"

His movies are usually on the darker side and this time is no exception.  "Pieta" follows the life of a debt collector who knows nothing about love and family in life.  He goes after the families and unfortunate people who are unable to pay back the debts, but he gives them no mercy.  His ruthlessness leads some to suicide and others to vengeance.  A woman appears in his life claiming to be his mother, and he finally tastes the love he has never had in his life.

The film received a standing ovation and is has also been invite to Toronto International Film Festival and Hamburg Film Festival.
