Season 4 of Person of Interest delivered the second part of its epic and action-packed trilogy on CBS. After Shaw (Sarah Shahi) went out in a blaze of glory, are Finch (Michael Emerson), and Reese (Jim Caviezel) ready to face off against a "much worse" Samaritan?

In the first part of our recap, the Samaritan wanted to meet with Root and sent in its avatar. Seeing The Machine as a fallen God, the Samaritan would take its place and promised to enslave humanity, in order to protect it. In the cliff-hanger, the Samaritan unleashed a virus onto Wall Street and forced the stocks trade to take a nosedive.

In the second part of our recap, the Machine had to come up with a scenario when Root and the others were trapped in a deadly shootout. After two simulations, the Machine predicted the deaths of Finch (Emerson), Reese (Caviezel), Fusco (Kevin Chapman), and Root (Amy Acker). Running out of time, the Machine chose the third simulation, where no one in the team was sacrificed.

Unfortunately, Martine and her operatives arrived ahead of time. In their last moment together, Shaw (Shahi) kissed Root (Amy Acker) before sacrificing herself to save them. Root screamed as loud as she could as she watched Martine point her gun at Shaw's head.

Creator/executive producer Jonathan Nolan reveals to Entertainment Weekly, "Samaritan is a very formidable enemy. We didn't want there to be nine episodes of Shaw carrying around a basketball or groceries [hiding a pregnancy]. That's not the character, that's not the show. So Sarah's exit gives us an opportunity to kind of affirm just how dangerous Samaritan is and just how high the stakes are for them. For us, it's a reminder of how much worse things can get."

Check out the cast and crew talking about that twist here:

As we previously mentioned, Shahi is indeed leaving the show because she is pregnant in real life (CONGRATS). This means Shaw will indeed be written off somehow, which could lead to an interesting direction in the series.

The Interstellar screenwriter adds, "The big question, and what our Team Machine is presented with here, is an adversary that's determined to find the Machine, and what are our guys going to do about that? And how are we going to be able to proceed when a member of our team is down? They're beleaguered-how are they going to recover? It's actually fun down the stretch."

Person of Interest returns Tuesday at 10pm on CBS for the third part of its trilogy. Readers, what did you think of If-The-Else?
