Famous American singer/songwriter and composer Randy Newman (who wrote the popular score for Disney's "Toy Story") has taken Irving Berlin's hit holiday tune "I'm Dreaming (of a White Christmas)" and turned it into a deep, tongue-in-cheek political satire. Newman's "I'm Dreaming (of a White President)" focuses on the role of race in politics and how such racial undertones have come to strongly affect the current presidential election between Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney. Newman (an Obama supporter) lambasts voters who cast their votes based primarily on skin color in his political rendition of "I'm Dreaming."
Newman, 68, stated in a recent press release, "I think there are a lot of people who find it jarring to have a black man in the White House and they want him out. They just can't believe that there's not a more qualified white man. You won't get anyone, and I do mean anyone, to admit it."
Newman's satire "I'm Dreaming of a White President" is written from the point of the view of a voter who casts his ballot based solely on the color of a man's skin. The chorus repeats the phrase: "I'm dreaming of a white President / Just like the ones we've always had." Newman believes the influence of race has gained way over more pressing political issues, such as the budget deficit and health care policy.
Newman (who is white, for those of you wondering) released "I'm Dreaming of a White President" as a free download on his personal website, but encouraged listeners to donate to the United Negro College Fund.
While Newman told the Associated Press that he was worried the satire may raise backlash from conservatives, he also claims that the topic of race was presented in a "delicate enough [fashion] that I'm not going to offend people every which way."
