Shakira Pregnant with First Baby, Makes Happy Official Announcement on Website

Rumors that Columbian pop star Shakira is pregnant with her first baby been circulating all summer. Now the 35-year-old songstress has confirmed those rumors with an official statement made on her website earlier on Wednesday. Shakira and her boyfriend, Spanish soccer star Gerard Pique, are happily awaiting the arrival of their first child.

In the statement posted on the home page of her website, Shakira writes:

"As some of you may know, Gerard and I are very happy awaiting the arrival of our first baby! At this time we have decided to give priority to this unique moment in our lives and postpone all the promotional activities planned over the next few days.

This means I will not be able to be a part of the iHeartRadio Music Festival, but I'm sure this weekend in Las Vegas will be spectacular and I will be closely following everything that happens there! 

I'd like to thank Clear Channel and my fans for their constant love and understanding.

Shakira may be putting all work aside due to a current illness involved with the pregnancy. An inside source confided to the Latino news outlet HuffPost Voces that, "Shakira has an illness more common than people think it is. It's called Toxoplasma and therefore she has to be more careful for herself and the fetus...until now they haven't been able to see the sex. The fetus is still very small...but the type of illness she has requires periodic exams that could reveal the sex of the baby earlier."

Toxoplasma is a parasitic disease that can commonly be transmitted through exposure to cat feces or undercooked meats.  It is a fairly common illness that can hopefully be easily attended to. Given that Shakira has finally made her pregnancy public, it looks like things must be going well.

Rumors surrounding Shakira's pregnancy were "confirmed" in a recent story published in the Colombian magazine "Gente" - inside sources claimed Shakira was four months along with a baby boy. The "Hips Don't Lie" singer and boyfriend Pique supposedly have already picked out a name for their soon-to-be son... "Ulicito," who is allegedly due to arrive sometime in January.
