When it comes to movie roles, especially comic book superhero casting news, we don't hear too many stories of actors turning down opportunities these days, but back in 2002, that was exactly the case for Jude Law. According to a new interview with MTV News, the Sherlock Holmes star was promoting his new film, Black Sea, but also revealed that he was offered and then turned down the role of Superman! Find out why Law didn't want to play Clark Kent below!

According to Law, filmmaker Brett Ratner had him in mind for his first choice to portray Superman in a new project he was developing back in 2002. Unfortunately for the filmmaker, even though Law was a big comic book fan, he turned down the role because he didn't want to be remembered as Superman for his entire career.

"I didn't want to spend the rest of my life being that guy who played Superman," he said, according to Film Drunk. "If you ever get caught smoking [a cigarette] and you're Superman then you ruin the lives of all the children around the world."

Law explained that he's up for the idea of playing Kent now, but back then, trying on the costume made him realize it wasn't what he wanted.

I go in the bathroom, put it on and look in the mirror, and suddenly, I am Superman," the actor explained. "And it is an amazing costume. My chest pops up and the music comes on... That was it. I got it out of my system. I took it off, put it in the bag, and was like, 'I'm not going to do it.' I saw myself. No need for the rest of the world to see me."

In case you were thinking that Law made a mistake by not taking this role, remember that he was the in-demand actor around that time, even receiving an Oscar nomination for his 2004 movie Cold Mountain. So Superman probably would've ruined that. What do you think of this news?
