Real-life ball players of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League who served as inspiration behind the hit 1992 film "A League of Their Own" traveled to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY on Friday to take part in an exhibition softball game on Saturday. The event is in honor of the film's 20th anniversary, and many members from the actual league as well as some stars from the movie will be in attendance.
About 50 former players in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, now all in their 70s and 80s, will play in the exhibition softball game at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse, NY over the weekend. A full roster has yet to be announced, but popular players like Catherine "Katie" Horstman and Jeneane Lesko are set to take the field.
Stars of the film "A League of Their Own" (inspired by the actual AAGPBL) will also make appearances at the game, including Megan Cavanagh who played Marla Hooch and Patti Pelton who played Marbleann Wilkenson.
The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was formed during World War II because many minor and major league male players were overseas as part of the armed services. The female-only league operated between 1943-1954, with 15 different teams and more than 600 players.
A "League of The Own" stars Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell among others. The film has been rereleased on Blu-Ray DVD in honor of its 20th Anniversary.
