Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes: Daughter Suri Still 'Stuck in the Middle'

Now that most of the hype and drama over Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' divorce has somewhat settled down, looks like daughter Suri is still "stuck in the middle" of Mommy and Daddy's "fight." While Holmes recently sent 6-year-old Suri off to her first day of school in New York, describing the event as "gut wrenching," Cruise was off in London filming a new movie, warned by Holmes to "stay away" for the monumental event. Even so, reports confirm that Cruise stays in touch with Suri as much as possible, talking with her on the phone at least two times a day.

The battle over Suri's education was a big part of the divorce proceedings - Cruise wanted to send her to a Scientology learning facility while Holmes wished for her to have a regular school education. Holmes eventually won out in the end, gaining primary custody of Suri as part of the divorce settlement.

But finally sending Suri off to school after everything that they have been through this summer was "gut wrenching" for Holmes. According to an inside source who spoke to Grazia, "Katie was in tears when she dropped Suri off. It marked the end of her battle with Tom. Having to wave Suri off after all that they've been through recently was gut-wrenching."

Supposedly Holmes had asked Cruise to "stay away" on Suri's first day of school, as to make things easier and less hectic for the little Hollywood cutie. "Katie knew there would be a circus that morning, so she asked Tom not to come," continued the source. "She wanted to make sure Suri felt as confident as possible on her first day."

While Cruise was away in London anyway, filming for his new movie "All you Need is Kill," some inside sources claim the distance away from Suri is starting to take its toll on the 50-year-old actor. "Tom talks to Suri several times a day," one source tells People. "He misses Suri very much. Tom and Suri are very, very close. He's up on everything that's going on in her life... He loves Suri and is a constant presence in her life. As in the past, when he's shooting in a foreign country, he has to rely on daily phone calls." Cruise is known to call Suri twice a day, sometimes more.

Whether it has anything to do with her parents' split or just first week of school jitters, Suri was spotted crying as she left a Greenwich hotel earlier in the week. Hopefully things work out between all three so that Suri lives a happy childhood with both parents in her life.
