National Hurricane Center forecasters report that Tropical Storm Miriam has rapidly gained strength and is now considered a Category 2 hurricane. Miriam lies well off of Mexico's Baja California peninsula in the Pacific Ocean, and currently poses no threat to land. Miriam is currently producing winds of up to 105 mph and has the potential to become a major hurricane by sometime later today (Monday, Sept. 24). The hurricane formed on Sunday in the eastern Pacific and at approximately 5 a.m. EDT on Monday was centered about 415 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. The National Hurricane Center has not issued any coastal watches or warnings - Miriam is currently moving northwest at about 13 mph.
