Reports confirm that influential West Coast Rapper Dominic "The Jacka" Newton was shot and killed in East Oakland, California on Monday evening (February 2). The Bay Area emcee was 37-years-old.

According to KPIX, Newton received a fatal gunshot wound to the head while hanging-out on 94th Ave. and MacArthur Blvd. at approximately 8:15 p.m. The suspect still remains unidentified at the time of this writing, and authorities have made no arrests.

The Pittsburgh, California native joined the popular hip-hop group Mob Figaz in 1999. According to the New York Daily News, the band's debut album C-Bo's Mob Figaz reached the No. 63 spot on the Billboard charts.

Newton was a devote Muslim who converted to Islam at a young age and changed his name to Shaheed Akbar. He's best known for his strong lyrics and rhymes. He later released a slew of solo albums and mixtapes, his last 2014 debut entitled What Happened To The World. He also owned his own record label called The Artist Records.
