Missing high school teenager Kara Alongi caused a panic on Twitter Sunday evening when she posted a frightening tweet asking for help because there was a strange intruder in her home - soon after, she seemingly disappeared. Now new reports claim that the "missing persons" case is merely a hoax and that Alongi may have posted the tweet to cover up the fact that she was running away - NJ police discovered that a cab was called to her home around the same time she posted the tweet.

The original post (misspelled, leading many to believe that she was in a hurry and hence was really in some sort of danger) 16-year-old Alongi tweeted that scared a number of Twitter users read:

@KarahAlongi:  "There is someone in my hour ecall 911."

Alongi's parents called the police once they realized their daughter was missing, and officers responded along with a canine unit (after sniffing out Alongi's scent to the end of the block, the track went cold).

But police began to get suspicious when there were no signs of foul play, struggle, or abduction in the Alongi household. Such inconsistences grew further when police found that someone in the home had called a local taxi company and ordered a pick up at that exact address right around the time that Kara posted the mysterious tweet. Earlier today, the Union County Prosecutor's Office said a cab driver positively identified Alongi as his passenger and told officials that he drove her to the Rahway train station. While the teenager is still missing, police believe that the Twitter post was a hoax to lead investigators off of her track. The prosecutor's office now believes that Alongi might feel as if she'll get in trouble for causing such a false and inappropriate panic, which is why she has yet to turn herself in. Authorities insist that all they care about is seeing her return home safe and sound.

The Rahway train station serves the Northeast Corridor line and the North Jersey Coast line, both of which have their northern-most stop in Manhattan. As of noon on Monday (Oct. 1), Alongi was still listed as missing and police have yet to report any further developments from their overnight search.
