American track and field athlete Lolo Jones' insensitive Twitter comment to paralyzed former Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand may have been unintentional, but that hasn't stopped fans from criticizing Jones' tweets as totally unacceptable and offensive. The Twitter controversy all began when LeGrand good-humoredly tweeted Jones, challenging her to a friendly race. Jones (apparently not knowing LeGrand is a quadriplegic) shot back with a tweet about how LeGrand should get his head checked, because he'd never beat her out on the track. She's been under fire for her ongoing "insensitive" and still unapologetic Twitter comments ever since.
LeGrand (lauded for his inspirational attitude ever since being injured and becoming paralyzed during a Rutgers football game back in 2010) tweeted this to Jones:
@EricLeGrand52: "Want to race me."
Jones' response? (indicating that she obviously didn't know LeGrand is now confined to life in a wheelchair, although his Twitter profile photo pictures him in one):
@lolojones: "get checked for a concussion. clearly u've been hit in the head... cos u arent beating a track athlete."
Twitter fans found the tweet completely inappropriate, with one individual tweeting Jones:
@finae25: "u know he's a quadriplegic now?"
If Jones' apparent obliviousness to the situation wasn't bad enough, it was her Twitter remarks made after her initial comeback that really got people annoyed:
@lolojones: "No, dnt know. sry dont know every football player. He challenged me 2 a race & I responded."
And then Jones' admitted realization that she probably shouldn't have even tweeted that remark:
@lolojones: "Great I'm gonna get murdered for that tweet. When I had no clue who that dude was.Just responding to any athlete who challenges me to a race."
While some Twitter fans shrugged off Jones' initial tweet as a "hey, she didn't know, it was a mistake" scenario, others lambasted the Olympic star for her blatant insensitivity. To the surprise of some, LeGrand wasn't one of those people. LeGrand tweeted this about the Jones Twitter controversy:
@EricLeGrand52: "didnt take it personal,understand where ur coming from.All good."
Which 21-year-old Jones finally seemed thankful for:
@lolojones: "Thx. Getting trashed by tons of ppl glad ur not one of em."
So what do fans think about the whole Twitter misunderstanding? Since LeGrand forgives Jones should everyone else cut her some slack too, or does she deserve to be reprimanded for her inconsiderate Tweets?
