Chris Lighty, the legendary hip-hop music executive who died just this past August, was honored in a beautiful tribute at the BET Hip-Hop Awards Tuesday night (Oct 9), with performances and shout-outs by many hip-hop/rap big-names that Lighty managed including 50 Cent, LL Cool J, Missy Elliott, and Busta Rhymes.
After an emotional video introduction by hip-hop mogul LL Cool J, Q-Tip and Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest stormed the stage performing their 1993 hit "Award Tour" as an intimate photo collage of the late Lighty flashed across the main stage's big screen.
"If it wasn't for Chris, then you wouldn't hear music like this," Tip shouted to the crowd. Famous rapper Busta Rhymes then took the stage, performing the tune "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See." Before spitting rhymes Busta announced, "Chris Lighty, we're gonna rep you until we're all outta here."
Longtime foes 50 Cent and Fat Joe even managed to put their hip-hop beef aside to honor their late inspiring mentor (the two have been feuding ever since Fat Joe teamed up with Fifty's ultimate rival Ja Rule back in 2004). The founder of G-Unit hit the audience with his 2007 megahit "I Get Money" while Fat Joe joined him onstage to perform his catchy track "Lean Back." One of the queens of hip-hop Missy Elliott then took the mic and thrilled the crowd to their feet with her hit "Get your Freak On."
Chris Lighty founded the record label and music management company Violater, which helped jump-start the careers of many popular hip-hop and R&B artists including: 50 Cent, LL Cool J, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Q-Tip, Mariah Carey, Ja Rule, and Sean "Diddy" Combs among others. Lighty shot himself in the head on August 30, 2012 in his Bronx apartment and died of an apparent suicide.
In a radio interview following the awards show, Fat Joe said: "While we were there, 50 whispered some things in my ear that was gentleman-like. He just said the right things and a handshake was involved and that was that. It was two grown men that just said, 'This is for Chris Lighty, this is for hip-hop, let's move on with our lives.' "
