The BBC's gritty crime drama Luther, starring Idris Elba, has officially started filming its highly anticipated season 4 episodes this week, with new casting news announced as well. Actresses Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey) and Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy) have joined the series in 2015, as well as Patrick Malahide, who portrayed Balon Greyjoy on Game of Thrones. This exciting news does come with a disappointing update on the show, though: actress Ruth Wilson won't be returning for the new season to reprise the fan-favorite role of Alice Morgan. According to a new press release announcing this production news (via Screen Rant), DCI John Luther is "pitted against his most chilling adversary yet, haunted by the ghosts of his past and hell-bent on retribution" in this new two-part special season, as he's "drawn into a terrifyingly complex case that pushes him closer to the edge than he's ever been."

One character from his past unfortunately won't be involved this time around. Though season three ended with Luther and Alice coming together and possibly looking at a romantic relationship, actress Ruth Wilson has not signed on for the new production. She recently won a Golden Globe award for her work on Showtime's The Affair.

"It's great we've been able to do this Luther special," Elba stated this week, according to the BBC. "John is so close to my heart, he's part of me. The fans won't be disappointed with his return - it's explosive and definitely goes up a gear!"
