"Desperate Housewives" actress Eva Longoria, known for posting her rather outspoken opinions on the popular social networking site Twitter, apologized for recently retweeting a controversial tweet that many fans found offensive, since it insinuated presidential nominee Mitt Romney is a racist and misogynist. In the derogatory retweet, Longoria (co-chair of the Obama campaign) referred to Romney as a tw#t, a deprecating name given to the female private part.
Check out the tweet that sparked the recent Twitter outrage against Longoria:
@EvaLongoria: "I have no idea why any woman/minority can vote for Romney. You have to be stupid to vote for such a racist/misogynistic tw*t."
Not long after the retweet, the 37-year-old actress sent out this message on Thursday:
@EvaLongoria: "Is anyone else's twitter bugging out? There are things in my timeline I didn't retweet today. Hmmm? Standby trying to fix!"
Even so, many Romney supporters were extremely offended and let Longoria know their feelings, such as this one:
@linseyajones: "You think being a bully and calling people stupid and tw*ts is a good role model?? Nice."
After all the heated backlash, Longoria offered an official apology on her "Who Say" website and Twitter, but made sure fans understood that the words were not originally hers:
"After such a heated "And for the record I have never personally called any conservative women stupid. I think u are all beautiful and strong and smart! I appreciate those conservative women who have sent me some great articles! I respect u, stay involved!"
Then went on to say:
"I use Twitter as a platform for all Americans and their opinions. Sorry if people were offended by retweet. Obviously not my words or my personal view. I respect all Americans #FreedomOfSpeech."
And:
"Let's close this conversation with a focus on the real issues, not tweets. For women, it's about equal pay, the economy and our health care choices."
So what do fans think? Should Longoria tone it down on her anti-Romney Twitter rants?
