Barack Obama may not have brought his "binders full of women" to the final bout of the 2012 Presidential Debates Monday evening (like Mitt Romney did last week), but the current president definitely wasn't shy about bringing up "horses and bayonets." That was part of the exact phrasing Obama used in regards to Romney's comment about the current size of the U.S. Navy - right after Obama muttered the words, the slogan hit the web and went viral on Twitter, Facebook, and beyond.
Here is the exact dialogue between Obama and Romney that brought about the "horses and bayonets" catchphrase:
ROMNEY:
"Our Navy is old -- excuse me, our Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917. The Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We're now at under 285. We're headed down to the low-200s if we go through a sequestration. That's unacceptable to me. I want to make sure that we have the ships that are required by our Navy. Our Air Force is older and smaller than at any time since it was founded in 1947."
OBAMA:
"You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines. And so the question is not a game of Battleship, where we're counting slips. It's what are our capabilities. And so when I sit down with the secretary of the Navy and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, we determine how are we going to be best able to meet all of our defense needs in a way that also keeps faith with our troops, that also makes sure that our veterans have the kind of support that they need when they come home."
The Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr world blew up with "horses and bayonets" themed posts and pages on Monday night (Oct. 22). The hashtag #horsesandbayonets brought about some funny comments on Twitter. Apparently at one point, fans were tweeting the phrase 105,767 times per minute:
@BlGBlRD: "Retweet if you think Obama won the debate. Invest in horses and bayonets if you think Romney won. #lynndebate #horsesandbayonets."
@beardedstoner: "It's unfair #horsesandbayonets is getting all the attention. It takes the focus off of "The 1980s called and wants its foreign policy back."
@MattVATech: "You know you're a terrible Republican when a Democrat just bi##hsmacked you with the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier. #HorsesandBayonets."
@rich_gallup: "My great-grandfather was a US Cavalryman in World War 1. We have his bayonet, if the government needs it back. #HorsesandBayonets."
The Obama campaign even bought the search term "bayonets" on Twitter to capitalize on the viral hysteria.
Meanwhile, the "Horses and Bayonets" Facebook page has close to 5,000 'likes' already, along with some hilarious photos.
The "Horses and Bayonets" Tumblr also has some memorable horses and bayonets-themed pics.
So what do Mstarz readers think - is "horses and bayonets" catchier than "binders full of women?"
