The Legend of Zelda for the Wii U has been delayed for what looks like until 2016. While the reasons are not completely specific, a Nintendo spokesperson said the game's developers would like to be patient in order to deliver the best possible game. This will come as a let down for most Zelda fans as the game was one of Nintendo's biggest announcements over at E3 this year.

"The new launch timing has not yet been determined. Because we'd like to focus on developing the game, we aren't planning on showing it at this year's E3, where we will be highlighting games launching in 2015. We will let you know when we're ready to share more specifics," a Nintendo spokesperson says.

We first got a hint of Zelda getting pushed back in December's Game Awards when Eiji Aonuma said the new Zelda Wii U game wouldn't be a "priority." Since then, Aonuma has posted a video making the sad announcement that forces fans to be patient.

"Since I declared at The Game Awards in December that the game would launch in 2015, the directors and the many members of the development team have been working hard developing the game to make it the best it can be," Aonuma said in the video.

While this is sad, historically, the Legend of Zelda franchise is constantly getting pushed back. The original release date for Ocarina of Time was 1997 but the game eventually came out in 1998. We were supposed to see Majora's Mask in 1999 but the game debuted in 2000.

In 2002, Windwaker was slated for a release but that changed to 2003. 2005 was supposed to be the year of the Twilight Princess but that changed to 2006 and in 2010, we were promised Skyward Sword only to wait one more year for it to eventually get shipped to Gamestops everywhere.

In the end, all we have is patience and history by our side because if history has taught us anything, every Zelda game is awesome beyond compare.
