Mollie Parsons, a nurse from Ohio, was sentenced to serve ten years behind bars this week after being charged in a malnutrition case, where she was found to have starved a handicapped teenager to death while under her provisional care. 14-year-old Makayla Norman, who had cerebral palsy, only weighed a meager 28-pounds at the time of her unfortunate death in 2011. Makayla's mother, Angela Norman, was also found guilty of starving her own daughter to death, and is already currently serving a nine year sentence.
Parsons, 42, was set to face trial in Ohio on Wednesday, but ended up pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter on Tuesday (Nov. 6). She will serve ten years for failing to provide for a functionally impaired child and tampering with records. Originally, Parsons had faced as little as three years - the she did not receive leniency with prosecutors because the plea bargain plea was not part of the original agreement going into trial.
According to reports, young Makayla (who died of malnutrition and medical neglect) had numerous bedsores and was living in filthy conditions at the time of her death - the coroner told authorities that the teen was the ''worst malnourished child'' his office had ever seen.
"I couldn't begin to describe to somebody what I saw. That poor child looked worse than any concentration camp victim I have ever seen, in any photo I have ever seen," said Judge Mary Katherine Huffman of the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court.
Parson was hired to take care of Makayla six days out of the week at her home in Dayton, Ohio with the girl's mother, Angela.
Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck told reporters on Tuesday, ''[Makayla] basically starved to death." Heck insists that Parsons ''had a duty, a responsibility, an oath that she took as a nurse to care for people, and in this particular case, this is one of the most dependent victims she would ever come in contact with in her entire life, and she simply failed to do anything."
Heck believes that Parson pleaded guilty so that more disturbing details about Makayla's death would not have the chance to surface during trial.
Two other Ohio nurses who served less significant roles in taking care of Makayla, Mary Kilby and Kathryn Williams, were sentenced to up to five years of probation in October.
