Lee MacPhail, 95, oldest Baseball Hall of Fame Member Dies

Lee MacPhail passed away of natural causes at the age of 95 at his home in Delray Beach, Fla, announced the

MacPhail, who celebrated his 95th birthday two weeks ago, was one of the oldest members of baseball's Hall of Fame. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998 on account of his five-decade career in the American Major League Baseball

.His father Larry MacPhai was also a revered member of Hall of Fame. It makes them the only father-son duo in Cooperstown.

"Baseball history has lost a great figure in Lee MacPhail, whose significant impact on the game spanned five decades," said Hall of Fame Chairman,Jane Forbes Clark, in a statement.

"As a Hall of Fame executive, Lee developed one of the game's strongest farm systems for the New York Yankees before serving as American League President for 10 years. He will always be remembered in Cooperstown as a man of exemplary kindness and a man who always looked after the best interests of the game," he added.

MacPhail was the Farm Director and Player Personnel Director for 10 years from 1949 for the New York Yankees. In 1959, he became the general manager for the Baltimore Orioles.

Lee MacPhail was elected to the Hall of Fame's Board of Directors in 1974, making him the longest-tenured member of the current Board. With MacPhail's death, Bobby Doerr at 94 becomes the oldest living Hall of Famer, said Reuters.
