Paula Broadwell, a Harvard researcher who co-wrote a biography on former CIA Director David Petraeus, is supposedly the "other woman" involved in Petraeus' admitted extramarital affair which led to the general's recent resignation from his highly-acclaimed post in the CIA. Slate blogger Fred Kaplan, the New York Times, MSNBC, and the AP all confirm reports about a Petraeus and Broadwell affair. Petraeus has been married to wife Holly for over 37 years and the couple has two children together, while Broadwell is married and has two kids with Scott Broadwell, a specialist in interventional radiology in Charlotte, N.C.
According to reports, Petraeus' affair with Broadwell was discovered during a recent FBI investigation. The FBI is now conducting an ongoing investigation into Broadwell to see whether she had improper access to Petraeus' emails and therefore may have seen classified information (it is unlikely that either Petraeus or Broadwell will be charged). According to the AP:
"Officials say revelations about the affair that led to Friday's resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus were discovered in the course of an FBI investigation.
The officials, briefed on what led to the CIA director's sudden resignation, spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter.
It was unclear what the FBI was investigating or when it discovered the Petraeus affair.

Broadwell (who also graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, same as Petraeus) co-authored "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus" (released earlier in 2012). According to Broadwell's website, she spent time with the general in Afghanistan from July 2010-July 2011 and was "afforded extensive access by General Petraeus, his mentors, his subordinates, and his longtime friends."
After granted his resignation from President Obama on Friday (Nov. 9), Petraeus released a public statement to the CIA work force which stated:
"After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation."
Petraeus met wife Holly while in college - the two inherited a rustic property in Springfield, NH.
Broadwell met Scott in Germany while training to become ski patrollers (both are self-described "adventure junkies"). The couple has two sons, Lucien and Landon.
Neither family has commented on the affair allegations.

And here is Broadwell discussing the status of women in the military:
As for Petraeus, President Obama eventually accepted his resignation, releasing in a statement: "David Petraeus has provided extraordinary service to the United States for decades... By any measure, through his lifetime of service David Petraeus has made our country safer and stronger... Going forward, my thoughts and prayers are with Dave and [wife] Holly Petraeus, who has done so much to help military families through her own work. I wish them the very best at this difficult time."
