Reports confirm that Jill Kelley, an unpaid social liaison to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL, is the woman who may have ultimately ousted General David Petraeus' highly-controversial extramarital affair, leading to his recent resignation as CIA Director. Kelley was the one to initially contact the FBI in regards to a number of harassing emails sent by a jealous Paula Broadwell, the mistress of Petraeus. Jill and her husband, Scott Kelley, have been close friends and acquaintances with Petraeus and his wife of 37 years, Holly, for five years. Reports allege that Broadwell may have been suspicious and jealous of Kelley's close relationship with Petraeus, prompting her to send a number of "threatening" emails. Worried about her safety, Kelley contacted the FBI who then traced the emails back to Broadwell - a number of private, intimate exchanges between Broadwell and Petraeus were also discovered, leading to publicized reports of an extramarital affair.
According to a friend close to the Kelleys, Jill and Scott are both civilians who avidly support the local military community - the couple befriended the Petraeus' when the general was stationed in Florida. The source confirms to ABC News, "It is very clear there was nothing going on [between Kelley and Petraeus] other than friendship." Even so, a jealous mistress (Paula Broadwell) became suspicious - a government official tells the New York Post, "(Broadwell) clearly thought something was going on and thought she was in a 'lovers triangle.'" She sent a number of harassing emails to Kelley, containing such threatening language as, "'I know what you did,' 'back off' and 'stay away from my guy.'" Kelley had no idea who the emails were from but feared for her safety, so contacted the FBI which led to an investigation. The threatening emails were traced back to Broadwell... as well as several intimate exchanges between Broadwell and the former CIA Director through his personal Gmail account.
Broadwell, who co-authored a biography on the popular general, was having an extramarital affair with Petraeus. He eventually admitted to the indecent relationship and recently resigned from his post as CIA Director, ultimately apologizing for his inappropriate behavior (President Obama granted the resignation on Friday, Nov. 9, read more on that here). Broadwell and Petraeus are both married with children - get more details on that here.
Kelley, 37, comes from a Lebanese family, the Khawams, who immigrated to Philadelphia in the mid-1970s. Reports claim that Kelley's parents currently operate a restaurant out of New Jersey - Jill and her twin sister Natalie (the youngest siblings in the Khawam clan) once appeared on a Food Network competition in 2003 that pitted two sets of twins against each other in the kitchen. The sisters moved to Tampa about a decade ago - Jill met husband Scott (a surgeon) and the couple quickly became active members in the community's social and military circuit.
Kelley released in a statement following Sunday's breaking news - "We and our family have been friends with Gen. Petraeus and his family for over five years. We respect his and his family's privacy and want the same for us and our three children."
