Based on the crime novels by the late author Elmore Leonard, the Season 6 finale of Justified finally aired. Was there an alternate ending for the series finale, where Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) witnessed Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) "committing suicide" during their final showdown?

In our previous recap, Boyd murdered an innocent man, (guest star Shea Whigham), who drove him to the mountaintop. During his intense shootout with Raylan, Boyd then filled Constable Bob (Patton Oswalt) with lead, distracting his former best friend. With Bob's status unknown, Boyd had an explosive confrontation with Zachariah. Ava (Joelle Carter) was finally captured by Avery's corrupt police officers and held hostage.

In our finale recap, Boyd threw dynamite to escape the marshals as he blasted his way through Avery Markham (Sam Elliott) to get to Ava. Though Raylan was tempted to pull his gun, he decided to arrest Boyd instead. Because his shootout with Boon (Jonathan Tucker) left him wounded, Raylan was unable to stop Ava from escaping.

In the four year jump, Raylan is a happily divorced father taking care of his daughter. Knowing Ava is raising Boyd's son, Raylan promised to keep her secret and falsified her death. Locked away in prison, Boyd and Raylan realized they are still best friends, ever since they dug coal together.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Goggins reveals he originally wanted his character to die, "My pitch, way back when before things evolved in the direction that they evolved in...in my heart of hearts, I wanted Boyd Crowder to pull and to shoot, only to realize there were no bullets in his gun and he was committing suicide, and Raylan kills him as a gesture of friendship. Because this is a story about friendship. Looking back on it, thinking about it now, I was wrong, and the ending, as I understood it in this incarnation-and I must say, at the beginning of this season, Graham [Yost] sat down the three or four of us and said, "What if nobody dies? I really don't want anybody to die." I had to think about that because I really wanted Boyd to die."

The Hateful Eight actor adds he loves how the show actually ended, "So selfishly I wanted it to go a different way, but I was very, very happy that Graham made this decision. I'll say this about the ending, and this is just me: My journey, Boyd Crowder's journey, was one towards love. It was the only flower that ever grew in his violent garden. For him, asking that question and getting that closure, that was his story."
