According to close friends of the Broadwell family, David Petraeus' infamous mistress Paula Broadwell quietly returned to her home in Charlotte, North Carolina with her husband Scott Broadwell and the couple's two young sons on Sunday evening (Nov. 18). An inside source (who wishes to remain anonymous) tells ABC News that the 40-year-old biographer and anti-terrorism professional "deeply regrets the damage that's been done to her family" from the highly-controversial affair scandal involving former CIA Director, Petraeus. The close family acquaintance insists that Broadwell is utterly devastated by the entire fallout which led to Petraeus' resignation and the FBI investigation launched due to her inappropriate emails sent to both Petraeus and military socialite Jill Kelley.

Broadwell and her family were greeted by a gathering of 25 supportive family, friends, and neighbors when they drove back to North Carolina on Sunday. The Broadwell couple were met by numerous reporters, but refused to answer any questions. Scott Broadwell, a specialist in interventional radiology, stated "no comment at this time," but that a possible public statement may be released later this week.

Paula met Scott in Germany while both were training to become ski patrollers. The couple has two young sons together, Lucien and Landon. For more information on the couple (as well as Petraeus and his wife of 37 years, Holly), click here.

Petraeus recently resigned from his honorable post as CIA Director after an FBI investigation ousted his inappropriate sexual affair with Paula Broadwell (who helped co-author the Petraeus biography, "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus"). For more details behind the highly-publicized case involving military liaison Jill Kelley and FBI agent Frederick Humphries, go here and here.

Prosecutors must make the critical decision if they should charge Broadwell with mishandling classified information for allegedly taking secret files from secure government buildings.  If found guilty it would be a violation of federal law, and Broadwell could face some dire consequences. However, authorities may just decide to allow the military to discipline her instead of making a whole case out of it (which would be complicated by the fact that as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Military Reserve, Broadwell had security clearance to review such private documents).

For now, it looks like Paula Broadwell will be focusing on her relationship with hubby Scott, to see if their relationship is even salvageable (especially  for the well-being of their two young sons).
