15-year-old Jordyn Alexander Howe of Homestead, Florida was arrested on Tuesday (Nov. 20) for manslaughter and carrying a concealed firearm after he accidentally and fatally shot a 13-year-old girl by the name of Lourdes Guzman-DeJesus on board a school bus. Guzman-DeJesus was promptly airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital from the private charter school bus on Tuesday morning, but did not survive. It appears Howe brought the gun on the bus to "show off" to schoolmates, but the weapon ended up accidentally firing and hitting Guzman-DeJesus fatally in the neck.

Howe's arrest affidavit states that the teenager pulled the gun from his backpack and began displaying it on the bus at around 7 a.m. The gun discharged just once, striking Guzman-DeJesus in the neck right in front of her horrified 7-year-old sister and peers.

The fatal shooting happened approximately seven minutes away from the school - Guzman-DeJesus attended the charter middle school Palm Glades Preparatory Academy while her younger sister went to nearby Summerville Advantage Academy.

When responders first arrived at the scene, they quickly recovered the gun and placed Howe into custody.

Police cordoned off the scene of the accident near SW 296 Street and SW 137 Avenue in Homestead while worried and shocked parents gathered around the crime tape. The eight other (unharmed) children on the bus and the driver were taken in by authorities to be interviewed for further information.

According to Mimai-Dade Detective Roy Rutland, "Obviously based...on the investigation and the evidence and based on interviews we conducted with him, it does appear to be an accident. I can assure you there was a comprehensive interview done regarding that gun and its whereabouts and where it originated, and based on what we're hearing it doesn't appear that anyone else will be charged at this time," he told CBS Miami.

Howe provided a sworn statement to Miami-Dade police before being transported to Miami-Dade Juvenile Assessment Center.

Guzman-DeJesus' school did not make an announcement about the fatal shooting while classes were in session, but news of her unfortunate passing soon began to spread throughout the halls as the final school bell rang.

"She was a good girl," said thirteen-year-old classmate Eric Carillo, "She was fun."

Guzman-DeJesus' school bus was not equipped with video surveillance equipment for the crime to be recorded.
