Before snagging awesome roles in two hit television series - "Parenthood" and "Arrested Development" - actress Mae Whitman starred in the epic 1996 diaster film, "Independence Day." A highly-anticipated sequel is finally in the works, but 26-year-old Whitman will NOT return. Instead, stunning blonde beauty Maika Monroe will portray the President's daughter instead. And several Twitter fans are livid, including fellow Hollywood starlet Anna Kendrick.

Earlier this week, the "Pitch Perfect" songstress shared this shocking response to Whitman's rather unexpected recast:

@AnnaKendrick47: "What the actual f*ck? @maebirdwing is talented as hell, and JUST proved she can carry a film. Smh."

The cyber world immediately exploded, insisting that producers made a very sexist move by casting a "prettier" female:

@10_nov: "No Mae Whitman? What, only conventionally attractive blonde women can star in a big film like yours? Shame on you!"

@MildlyAmused: "And FFS YES, Mae Whitman is hot as hell. But apparently the Hollywood machine must feast only on a certain body type."

‏@chrisfarren: "mae whitman is the best and if you disagree the space aliens have already won."

@BDF331: " Mae Whitman deserves better than playing the love interest to that dial tone, Liam Hemsworth."

@stopthepota: "Unless Mae Whitman turned down the role, there is no reason to recast The President's daughter for the Independence Day sequels."

@alicialutes: "WHY DID THEY RECAST MAE WHITMAN'S PART IN INDEPENDENCE DAY 2? File Under: Things That Are Totally Not OK."

Do MstarsNews readers agree, or does Whitman's "DUFF" status hold too true?

Details surrounding the ultimately decision to cut Whitman still remain unconfirmed. But she did respond to Kendrick's supportive tweet with this:

@maebirdwing: "Man, I love you to death kid."

Several original cast members (including Jeff Goldblum,Judd Hirsch, and Bill Pullman) will return for "Independence Day 2." Monroe, a 21-year-old industry newbie, beat-out Lucy BoyntonMerritt Patterson, Britt Robertson, and Gabriella Wilde for the revamped role (via The Hollywood Reporter).
