The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron has been a monstrous success in its first few days in theaters, and much of the credit for that success goes to writer and director Joss Whedon. But in a recent interview, Whedon reveals that he actually wanted Spider-Man in the movie and talked about some contentious moments with Marvel.

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD

Whedon appeared on the Empire podcast and talked about how he had to fight for important scenes in the movie, such as the dream sequences caused by Scarlet Witch and the moments at Hawkeye's farm. “The dreams, the farmhouse, these were not the things [the executives liked]… these are things I fought to keep,” Whedon said, adding that he only had a day to shoot each dream sequence.

The director also explained that others who had input on the film wanted more out of the sequence in which Thor sees images of the Infinity Stones in his vision quest in the cave. “With the cave it really turned into, they pointed a gun at the farm’s head and said, ‘Give us the cave or we’ll take out the farm’—you know, in a civilized way,” said Whedon, who also liked one version of the cave scene. “And I respect these guys, they’re artists, but that’s when it got really, really unpleasant.”

Whedon said he even thought about completely removing the scene, but editors convinced him to leave it in some form. “I was so beaten down at that point I was like, ‘Sure, okay. What movie is this?’” he said.

Finally, Whedon talked about the ending of the movie, in which a new lineup of Avengers (Captain America, Black Widow, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, and War Machine) debuts. Apparently, the writer wanted even more characters in there. “I said, ‘It would be great if we could just add a few more, if you guys could… have a Captain Marvel that you made a deal for,’” Whedon said. “And they talked about it… and I was like, ‘And Spider-Man, would you do that too?’ So I would have put both of them in, but neither of the deals were made.”

In the final line of the film, Captain America says "Avengers..." and is presumably about to say "assemble" before the camera cuts off. But Chris Evans never actually uttered the second word in the phrase. “I made sure we never shot him saying it, because I was positive some executive was going to go ‘Uh, you forgot to put in the last word,’” Whedon said.
