Former University of Texas at El Paso cheerleader and current U.S. Army Soldier Jalyessa Walker broke the world record for number of consecutive back handsprings in a row by tumbling an outstanding 49 times across the field at a recent El Paso football game. And what does the 23-year-old Army 2nd Lieutenant have to say about her record crashing victory - she wishes she had room to do more, considering her goal was originally to complete 50 backflips! Walker beats the Guinness World Record which currently states the highest number of consecutive backflips executed is just 35.

Walker completed the world record in front of a crowd of 20,400-plus fans at an El Paso vs. Rice University football game at Sun Bowl Stadium. She continuously flipped her body from one end of the field to the other, passing the end zone and landing in the concrete before eventually stopping.

"As soon as I hit the concrete, I was starting to get tired and scared because I didn't want to fall," Walker said. The entire event was filmed and she plans on sending it in to the Guinness World Records soon where it will be determined if her 49 backflips are indeed an official world record.

It took Walker one challenging month to train for the back handspring extravaganza. After graduating from UTEP in May 2012, Walker temporarily left her cheerleading and gymnastics days behind to take part in the Basic Officer Leadership Course at Fort Lee, Va. She hadn't tumbled for four straight months and was concerned about the tendinitis in her wrists and the pain in her legs that flared up once she reached 30 handsprings during practices.

While Walker was extremely motivated to reach her record breaking goal, her mother Joleen Walker made sure that the young Army Lieutenant paced herself while training - "When she sets her mind on what she wants to do, she does it," Joleen insists.

And why aim for 50 backflips, exactly - "I like challenges," Walker said. "I've been in gymnastics since I was 4, and tumbling is what I love to do. This is the perfect thing for me. So I thought: Why not give it a try?"

The current official back handspring Guinness World Record belongs to St. Mark's School of Texas high school cheerleader Miranda Ferguson, who tumbled 35 consecutive times back in October.
