‘American Idol’ Canceled: Former Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe Says “It Was Time”

So many people around the country are bummed about the sudden cancellation of FOX's American Idol after one more season. But if you ask the show's former executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe, he believes it was time for the network to "rest it."

TMZ caught up with Lythgoe in New York City just hours after FOX made the announcement that after one more season the show would be over and asked what he thought of the network's decision. It looks as if he was a little surprised but understood and equated the show to heavyweight boxing.

"You've got to know when to stop fighting. And don't let the little boxers come and knock you out."
