Carrie Underwood in 'The Sound of Music,' Country Songstress to Play Julie Andrews' Iconic Maria von Trapp in NBC Special [VIDEO]

NBC confirms that pop-country songstress Carrie Underwood will take on Julie Andrews' iconic role as Maria von Trapp in a television special reboot of the classic 1965 musical film "Sound of Music." According to the head-honchos over at the popular American broadcasting network, the special three-hour event live telecast will take place during the holiday season of early 2013.

Chairman of NBC Entertainment Robert Greenblatt released in a statement on Friday, Nov. 30 - "Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp. She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist."

NBC is partnering with producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (the team that produced the network's hit musical series "Smash") for the "Sound of Music" holiday project. Zadan and Meron announced in a recent press release - "We're thrilled to be presenting the Broadway version of The Sound of Music live... having Carrie Underwood as the star brings it to a new generation who will fall in love with it for the first time as many millions of people already have. It's a particular joy to us as producers to see this amazing artist stretch into new territory with this classic musical."

So what do Mstarz fans think of Underwood taking on Andrews' infamous role in the Broadway musical-turned-film as the free-spirited governess, Maria von Trapp?

Here's a little sneak-peak of what the multi-platinum "Blown Away" country songstress could bring to the part - Underwood performed the "Sound of Music" back in 2007 for the CBS special "Movies Rock."
