Apple has been developing a new type of ultra-high-definition TV set for a number of years, and it looks like that development will continue for the time being. This week, we learned that the company has quietly backed away from announcing any news on this project's updates, with the possibility of the release being cancelled, but most definitely postponed to a date in the not-so-near future. Ultra-HD sounds pretty great, especially involved in a product from the company behind the iPad, iPhone and other innovations, but let's just take a breath in regards to this. We won't be getting this new Apple TV set any time soon, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal (via IGN).

Apparently, the company has shelved the project, ceasing development for now due to lacking technological advances (via CNet).

CNet points out that one Apple shareholder, Carl Icahn published an open letter about Apple's future in dominating two new markets.

"Apple is poised to enter and in our view dominate two new categories (the television next year and the automobile by 2020) with a combined addressable market of $2.2 trillion, a view investors don't appear to factor into their valuation at all," the investor wrote.

As you can see, he mentions the TV and even a car, but that just makes this situation even more confusing. If a top investor is pretty convinced he's spending money on a new TV, why haven't we heard anything concrete about the project?

For now, we'll have to wait and enjoy the Apple TV device that lets us broadcast our favorite forms of entertainment to our regular, dumb, old TVs.
