Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. underwent a creative renaissance in Season 2, and many fans were pleased with the choices the show made throughout its second season. But there's no denying that the season portrayed some weaker moments that deserve mentioning.

So without further ado, allow us to present our Top 5 Worst Moments from Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Season 2:

The Avengers: Age of Ultron Semi Tie-in

The Avengers: Age of Ultron featured a twist toward the ending in which S.H.I.E.L.D. used a helicarrier to help the superhero team save the population of an Eastern European city and, by extension, the world. On the television series, we learned that Phil Coulson had actually put the Theta Protocol into place to bring the Avengers together and ultimately have the helicarrier save them.

But on the show, it barely earned a passing mention, and Coulson's name surely didn't merit a mention in the movie. The two entities were technically joined, but not actually joined. The Captain America: Winter Soldier tie-in was strong because it fundamentally changed the landscape of the show. This Avengers tie-in was weak to say the least.

Too Much Filler

When Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returned for its second half, the stretch of episode slowed to a crawl at points until we ramped up to the Season 2 finale. We spent too much time talking and not enough time delving into the important issues. Furthermore, the action scenes were few and far between in this batch of episodes.

Real S.H.I.E.L.D.

The concept of "Real S.H.I.E.L.D." was cool enough, but ultimately the group led by Robert Gonzalez was more of an irritant that a credible threat. The problem was that this group stood for transparency and honesty, but Coulson never gave anyone a reason to believe that he was working against the interests of his own people. By the time the two S.H.I.E.L.D. groups merged, it was too late to really matter.

Not Enough Ward

Grant Ward is a fascinating character because he was a villain masquerading as a hero, though he was convinced he actually was on the side of right. But instead of exploring this, the series relegated Ward to a side character for much of the season. This is a character who broke his own hands to get out of handcuffs and tortured Bobbi Morse sadistically, but we barely got to get into his head throughout Season 2, which was a wasted opportunity.

Not Enough Focus

Season 2 did a lot of things right when it introduced multiple characters and faction, including Hydra, the Inhumans, and Real S.H.I.E.L.D. But this ultimately led to a lack of focus that hurt the season. With so many characters to keep track of, it became difficult to remember whom we should care about as the action raced ahead. A more focused Season 3 would do wonders for the series.
