Oregon police have identified 22-year-old Jacob Tyler Roberts as the gunman who stormed the Clackamas County mall on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 11) with a an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, ultimately killing two and critically injuring one other shopper before committing suicide. Authorities have yet to identify a motive for the shooting - they are still piecing together the suspect's actions leading up to the tragic holiday killing spree.
Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts announced in a recent press conference, "At this time we do not understand the motive of this attack except to say there is no apparent relationship between the suspect and his victims."
As of this writing, Roberts had no personal connection with the Clachamas Count mall or any of his victims.
According to reports, Roberts entered the Clackamas County mall on Tuesday at approximately 3:30 p.m. and exclaimed "I am the shooter" before opening fire on the unsuspecting holiday shoppers. The young man was wearing a white hockey mask and a load-bearing vest and carrying a stolen semi-automatic gun. Roberts fired several shots near the food court before the rifle jammed up and he was forced to run into a nearby Macy's store. Law enforcement believe Roberts fired his weapon at least 20 times.
Fellow shoppers attempted to find refuge in safe stores throughout the mall, and many tweeted updates as the shooting was actually taking place.
Lt. James Rhodes of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office reports that three people were killed, including the shooter. Roberts died of a self-inflicted gunshot. One other shopper was wounded during the shooting spree - 15-year-old Kristina Shevchenko who suffered a traumatic injury and is currently listed in serious condition at a local Portland hospital. The two victims who died have been identified as 54-year-old Cindy Ann Yuille and 45-year-old Steven Forsyth. Both families of the deceased have issued statements:
From the Forsyth family:
"Steven Mathew Forsyth was a loving husband, father of two children, son, brother, uncle, youth sports coach and friend to the many people who had the privilege to meet him. Steve was one of the most passionate people with a true entrepreneurial spirit that drove him to start his business, Coastoms. He had a great sense of humor and a zest for life. He had vision and a belief in others that brought great joy and value to many lives. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him."
From the Yuille family (who insist they will release another statement to authorities at a later time):
"Cindy was everybody's friend. She was a wonderful person who was very caring and put others first."
The Clackamas Town Center posted this message on its Facebook page: "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was in the mall at the time of this unfortunate incident. We are grateful to have the stellar support of all the law enforcement agencies and rescue personnel in the area, who immediately took action and continue to ensure the safety of everyone remaining on property."
The Oregon mall will be closed Wednesday (Dec. 12) as police continue an investigation into the shootings.
