At an exhibition match against Maria Sharapova this past weekend, Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki got some giggles from the crowd by impersonating her fellow Wimbledon pal Serena Williams on the court, stuffing her bra and panties and prancing around in a tight tank top and short skirt. An innocent prank which was meant to be taken in good humor has now sparked a viral social media debate - was Wozniacki's Williams impersonation simply funny, or actually racist? Check out the on-court tennis stint and decide for yourself.
Wozniacki appeared to be having some fun with her impersonation get-up, as did most of the crowd (including tennis player Roger Federer) and her competitor Sharapova. The prank obviously wasn't mean to be taken so seriously, check it out:
The video has since gone viral, with many critics slamming 22-year-old Wozniacki for being flat-out racist (although her and Williams are actually pretty good friends).
Sherri Shepherd said on "The View" on Wednesday (Dec. 12) - "I know they are friends, but still, inside it does something to me, because we've been made fun of for so long for different parts of our bodies... And to see Serena Williams reduced to this, I don't like it.
Professional basketball player Swin Clash said - "I'm not so quick to use the word race, it's racist. I will say that it's very disappointing, and for me if you're a friend, you understand that even though I have high self-esteem you also need to be held responsible for social conscience."
Many Twitter fans also had something to say about the impersonation, taking on both sides of the debate:
@hazzarDeuce: "This is an old racist trope about our supposed hypersexuality and sexual abnormality."
@SI_BTBaseline: "So Caroline Wozniacki does exact same Serena impression that Roddick and Djokovic have done, yet she becomes the lightning rod. Interesting."
@webmonkeydc: "Perfect example of having opinions without knowing facts. Not racist! They're friends! Serena knows her body."
@enjabz: "Having seen the @CaroWozniacki's imitation of @serenawilliams, she was just having clean fun, no offense meant or taken. #Myopinion."
Both Wozniacki and Williams declined to comment on the hotly-debated impersonation, but Wozniacki's rep did tell ABC News, "It was all in good fun as Serena is one of her closest friends on tour."
So what do Mstarz fans think - was Wozniacki's prank racist?
FYI: This isn't the first time Wozniacki has pulled a Serena Williams impersonation prank - in December 2011 she stuffed her clothes while dancing around on the court to Rihanna.
